Leith Observer Poems
Leith for Ever are pleased to present this selection of poems kindly shared with us by local historian Andrew Grant. These poems were written mainly by Leith people during the Great War and shortly after. They were originally printed in the "Leith Observer". Andrew has collected the poems from issues of the Leith Observer dated between 1914 and 1920 as part of his research about Leith during World War One.
The Edinburgh Boundaries and Tramways Extension bill was enacted on the the 2nd November 1920. The first new joint council meeting took place three days later, on the 5th (the date the 100 days of Leith project launched last year). The poems posted from the 2nd to the 5th November are a response to this amalgamation.
From the 7th to the 14th November, the poems posted are from during the Great War in honour of remembrance week.
