One of the artists participating in our Celebrating Leith weekend this Saturday and Sunday is Sasha Saben Callaghan (@SashaSaben) - an Edinburgh-based artist, writer, and disability rights campaigner. Her work employs collage techniques, iconographic imagery, and juxtaposition to unravel tensions and contradictions found within the politically-charged parameters of everyday life. Sasha will be on our Leith For Ever performance stage on the Saturday, 17th September, to talk about her latest project and ask the audience to imagine what it would be like to be an 'inmate' in one of Leith's poorhouses? Sasha's project reimagines the lives of six disabled Leithers from times past. We have a vibrant and diverse programme of artist talks, music, song and more on our performance stage. This Saturday, 17th September, part of our Celebrating Leith weekend, our performance stage will see a number of local community singers, artists, musicians, writers and more showcase their talents. We look forward to welcoming the Ukranian Choir, part of the Edinburgh Ukrainian Community club to our stage! Leith has been the heart of the Ukrainian Community for 70+ years by being the home of the Consulate, Church, Community Centre and Holodomor memorial. As the cultural heart of the Ukrainian Community, Leith has provided a focal point over the years including celebrating the most recent Eurovision Win, Political Milestones, 30 years of Independence as well as moments of social gathering. Over the last six months, the Ukrainian Community Centre at 14 Royal Terrace has been at the centre of Edinburgh's response to the war in Ukraine and arrival of Displaced Ukrainian People in the city. In February, shortly after the start of the war, a humanitarian aid collection was set up which attracted the support of 1,000+ people over a three-week period and supported six lorries of aid to Poland and Ukraine. As well as Humanitarian aid, the community centre has been hosting events, gatherings and information sessions for Ukrainians arriving to ensure their social, cultural and initial resettlement needs are met.
